1. Start Here: NCWorks Career Center — Cumberland County

This is the front door for nearly every free employment service in the county. Walk in or call:

All free: job listings and employer connections, resume and cover-letter help, interview prep, career counseling, and computer/internet access. Veterans: by law you get priority of service — tell the front desk you’re a veteran and ask for the veterans’ employment specialist (DVOP). They work only with veterans.

2. Free Job Training — Sometimes They Pay You

• WIOA Training Scholarships (through NCWorks). If you can’t land or keep a self-sufficient job, a WIOA case manager at NCWorks may cover tuition, books, fees, and supplies for approved local training — plus support like transportation, childcare, uniforms, tools, and certification exam costs. Start at the center above and ask to speak with a WIOA career counselor before signing up for any program.
• FTCC H.O.P.E. Re-connect — Fayetteville Technical Community College. Free 5–8 week accelerated courses (construction, welding, hospitality, office administration, and more) for Cumberland County residents 18+. Tuition fully covered, industry credentials included, and paid internships with stipends up to $1,200. Call 910-678-9799 or email cesc@faytechcc.edu.

3. Veterans: Use What You’ve Earned

• VA Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E / Chapter 31). If you have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% that makes it harder to work, VA will provide career counseling, paid training or college, resume support, and job placement — and may pay a monthly subsistence allowance while you train. Discharged on or after January 1, 2013? There’s no time limit to apply. Apply online (VA Form 28-1900) at va.gov or call 800-827-1000.
• VA Compensated Work Therapy (CWT). For veterans whose mental health or physical conditions create barriers to employment — real, paid work experience with support, right at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center. Call 910-488-2120 and ask for the CWT program.
• Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program (HVRP). The only federal program focused exclusively on employment for veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness — job training, placement, and help with barriers like transportation and childcare. Access it through the VA homeless line 877-424-3838 or your SSVF case manager.
• Still serving at Fort Liberty? The Soldier for Life–Transition Assistance Program (SFL-TAP) is free and required — start at least 12 months before your separation date through your unit or the installation transition center.

4. Resume, Computer & Job Search Help — No Cost

• Goodwill Career Center — Fayetteville. Free resume help, job search support, computer access, and training programs — no appointment needed. goodwillncc.org
• NCWorks Online — ncworks.gov. Free account: searchable statewide job listings, resume builder, and job-match alerts from home or any phone.
• NC 211 — dial 211. Free referrals to job-readiness programs, work clothing closets, and transportation assistance across Cumberland County.

5. Facing Barriers? These Programs Were Built for You

• A record, a long gap, or no diploma — WIOA services at NCWorks specifically prioritize job seekers with employment barriers. Say so up front; it can move you to the front of the line, not the back.
• A disability (non-service-connected) — NC Vocational Rehabilitation Services helps people with disabilities prepare for, find, and keep work: counseling, training, and job placement at no cost. Find your local office through dhhs.nc.gov or dial 211.
• Second-chance employers — the career counselors at NCWorks and Goodwill both keep lists of local employers who hire people with records. Ask directly; they hear it every day.
